We take a "Tape Art On Demand" approach to drawing in patients' rooms. This means that when we enter a patient's space we ask them and there families one simple question: what do you want to see on your walls?
It is important to give people a sense of ownership over the space, especially in scenarios where patients are hospitalized for long periods of time. Returning to the hospital regularly gives us the chance to build relationships with long-term patients and provide them the small relief of dynamic surroundings.
At our local children's hospital we have the privilege to serve certain patients who spend years in the same hospital room. Every time we visit them they know that they can ask us to draw anything they want to see, and in doing so we are able to give them even the smallest amount of control in an environment where they have absolutely none.
