For elementary students, a Tape Art exercise may be the first time that they have the opportunity to create art with their peers in a truly collaborative way. This means learning how to share space, communicate, come up with and work towards a common vision, and problem solve together.
Elementary students also feel what it is like to be fearless creators with a medium that is infinitely adjustable. Being able to make edits in real-time without fear of smudging a blank page or "ruining" an outline frees participants to take risks with their art-making.
Service Project: Nursing Homes
Bringing elementary students into nursing homes to draw for elderly populations is a great fit engaging them with the surrounding community. It also provides young students a chance to gain new perspectives from a population they may not come into contact with often. Below, a class of students from Ridgefield Elementary School bring the hallways of a local nursing home to life with an animal-filled circus and the pyramids of Egypt.
